A BIT ABOUT ME
I’m Ben Derico — a journalist and documentary filmmaker based in San Francisco.
My work includes news segments & explainers, short documentaries, and branded content. I work in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
I’ve worked as a staff Video Journalist & Producer with BBC News and produced for The Intercept, CNN, The Washington Post, and Público, Portugal’s largest newspaper, as well. When not filming my own stories, I work with other journalists, content creators, and non-fiction filmmakers to capture stunning visuals that put story first.
Before journalism, I worked for a decade as a commercial video producer, editor, and director with agencies like Leo Burnett & IDEO and brands like Apple. I crafted edits on big budget ads, filmed beautiful frames for branded content projects, and produced engaging online content for social media.
I earned my masters in journalism with a concentration in short-form video from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. My thesis documentary Hasta la última gota, following the fight for water and a new constitution in Chile, was published in The Intercept. The film had its US premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival, and premiered internationally at the Banff Mountain Film & Book Festival in Alberta, Canada.
I’m trained to shoot and produce Live TV via LiveU and I am HEFAT trained.
